Teen Sprinter Chinyere Eze Switches Allegiance From South Africa to Nigeria

Nigeria’s athletics prospects have received a boost following the decision of 19-year-old sprinter Chinyere Eze to switch her international allegiance from South Africa to Nigeria.

The young quarter-miler is now eligible to compete for Nigeria after completing the necessary process in December 2025, according to her profile on World Athletics.

Eze, who specialises in the 400 metres, has already shown signs of promise on the track. She posted a time of 54.74 seconds at the Confederation of African Athletics Championships, underlining her growing potential ahead of major international competitions.

Her switch comes at a crucial time as Nigeria prepares for the World Athletics U-20 Championships scheduled to hold in Eugene from August 5 to 9, 2026.

The biennial competition, which features top young athletes from around the world, is open to competitors born on or after January 1, 2007, and serves as a key platform for emerging talents.

Eze’s inclusion is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s youth athletics team as the country aims to return to the podium after recent disappointments. Nigeria has historically enjoyed success at the championships, winning a total of 37 medals, including 14 gold.

However, the country failed to secure any medals at the 2022 and 2024 editions, a dip in performance that has heightened expectations ahead of the next event.

With her eligibility now confirmed and her performances on the rise, Eze is widely seen as one of the athletes to watch as Nigeria intensifies preparations for a strong outing in Eugene.
