2027: Speculations Rise as Kwankwaso Hosts Obi, Makinde, Dickson in Kano

Fresh political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections may be taking shape following a high-profile gathering hosted by former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his Kano residence.

Among the notable visitors were the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi; Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde; and Senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson.

The meeting, which coincided with the Sallah celebration, has sparked widespread speculation about possible alliances among opposition figures as political actors begin early positioning ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Kwankwaso, who shared details of the visit on his official Facebook page, described it as a festive gathering.

“Delighted to host Their Excellencies, Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde, and Seriake Dickson at my Kano residence for this joyful Sallah celebration. Wishing everyone peace, blessings, and prosperity,” he wrote.

However, beyond the celebrations, political observers say the convergence of influential figures from different parties signals more than a routine courtesy visit.

Speaking during the gathering, Obi hinted at deeper engagements focused on economic recovery and regional development.

“Although we are here to celebrate Sallah, we are also building a strong association to help restore Kano’s industrial base and support broader economic recovery,” he said.

He further disclosed that discussions were ongoing around reviving key industrial clusters such as Bompai and Sharada, as well as exploring the return of legacy institutions like the Bank of the North.

The presence of leaders cutting across major opposition blocs has fueled talks of possible coalition-building, especially as parties begin to reassess strategies following the 2023 elections.

Sources familiar with the developments suggest that Kwankwaso has intensified consultations across political lines, amid internal challenges within the NNPP, including leadership disputes that have unsettled the party.

Analysts say such engagements could shape the direction of opposition politics, particularly if they translate into formal alliances capable of mounting a strong challenge in 2027.

Despite the growing speculation, those present maintained that the visit was primarily to celebrate Sallah and promote unity, though the political undertone was hard to ignore.
