Promotions Without Discipline Not Acceptable, IGP Warns Senior Officers

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a strong warning to its newly promoted senior officers, stressing that elevation in rank comes with increased responsibility and zero tolerance for misconduct.
The message was delivered by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, during a decoration ceremony at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Hall on Monday.
Addressing officers promoted to Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police, Disu said promotions are not rewards but a call to higher accountability.
“There will be zero tolerance for indiscipline, abuse of office, corruption, or dereliction of duty under your command,” he said, urging officers to lead with integrity and professionalism.

The IGP emphasized that effective supervision is key to reducing misconduct, and senior officers will be held responsible not only for their actions but also for the behavior of personnel under their command.
“Our policing must be driven by professionalism, respect for human rights, and responsiveness to the needs of the people,” Disu added.
As part of ongoing reforms, all newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General and Assistant Inspectors-General will participate in a strategic leadership retreat starting March 24, 2026.
The program, organized with the United Nations Development Programme, will focus on modern policing standards, transformational leadership, and operational efficiency.
Disu also highlighted mentorship as a core duty for senior officers, encouraging them to nurture younger talent within the Force. He reiterated that future promotions would continue to be based on merit, performance, and integrity.
In addition, the IGP announced plans for the second edition of National Police Day on April 7, 2026.
Nationwide activities will begin on March 30, including medical outreaches, community engagement programs, and a grand parade with awards to honor outstanding personnel.
The ceremony, attended by top-ranking officers and dignitaries, reinforced the Force’s commitment to disciplined, people-centered policing, while acknowledging the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Police Service Commission in advancing reforms.
