Obi Raises Alarm Over Arrest of Cleric Who Hosted Him in Kaduna

Former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over the arrest of a Kaduna-based cleric who recently hosted him, describing the development as a threat to Nigeria’s democratic space.
Obi disclosed the incident in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, revealing that the cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar, was reportedly arrested shortly after receiving him during a visit to Kaduna State on Sunday.
“I have just been made aware early this morning that revered religious leader, Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar, has been arrested by authorities shortly after hosting me in Kaduna on Sunday,” Obi wrote.
The former presidential candidate described the development as “deeply troubling,” warning that it reflects growing concerns over civil liberties in the country.
According to him, actions perceived as harassment or intimidation of citizens and political actors could undermine democratic principles if not addressed.
“This development underscores the troubling state of our nation, where freedom of speech and movement is increasingly threatened,” he said.
Obi stressed that the protection of fundamental rights, including freedom of expression, remains central to any functioning democracy.
“Suppression and intimidation of dissent can never stand in a democratic society, and the government must recognise this,” he added.
He further urged relevant authorities to uphold the rule of law and avoid actions capable of weakening democratic institutions.
Observers say the incident has sparked fresh debate around civil rights and political tolerance in Nigeria, especially as the country continues to navigate its post-election political climate.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from security agencies on the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
