PDP Convention: Support Grows for Yusuf, Ortom as Chairmanship Race Heats Up

Pressure is mounting within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for a consensus candidate ahead of its national convention, with growing support for former lawmaker Teejay Yusuf and former Benue State governor Samuel Ortom.
The development comes as the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meets in Abuja to deliberate on key issues that will shape the March 29–30 convention.
Sources within the party said the position of National Chairman has been zoned to the North Central region, triggering intense consultations and lobbying among stakeholders.
While Ortom is said to be enjoying backing from influential blocs within the party, including allies of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Yusuf is increasingly being projected by some groups as a unifying figure capable of stabilising the party.
A group under the aegis of North Central Initiatives has already endorsed Yusuf, describing him as a bridge-builder with the experience and network required to reposition the PDP.
In a statement, the group said Yusuf’s loyalty to the party and consistent political track record make him a strong candidate to lead the PDP at a critical time.
Meanwhile, internal tensions persist within the party, with factions trading accusations over alleged attempts to derail the upcoming convention.
A faction linked to former minister Tanimu Turaki has rejected claims by the Wike-backed camp that it was plotting to secure a court injunction to stop the convention.
Responding to the allegation, the faction’s spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, dismissed it as unfounded, accusing the opposing camp of raising unnecessary alarm.
“We have shown commitment to reconciliation, but it is unfortunate that some are more interested in public accusations,” he said.
The leadership crisis has further deepened amid speculations over alleged support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, the Wike-backed group has denied the claim, insisting the party remains committed to its role as a strong opposition force.
As the convention draws closer, party leaders are expected to intensify negotiations in a bid to reach consensus and avoid further divisions that could weaken the PDP’s chances in future elections.
