Makinde, Wike Camps Open Peace Talks to Avert PDP Crisis

The Peoples Democratic Party has initiated moves to resolve its internal rift as factions loyal to Seyi Makinde and Nyesom Wike begin reconciliation talks in a bid to stabilise the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development follows months of intense infighting marked by court cases, public disagreements, and political manoeuvring that raised concerns over the party’s cohesion and readiness for future polls.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, factional National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, said steps had been taken to ease tensions after intervention by the party’s Board of Trustees led by Adolphus Wabara.

“In obedience to the advisory of the Court of Appeal, Ibadan, the Board of Trustees constituted a high-powered committee to interface with our estranged party members,” Turaki said.

He explained that the National Working Committee aligned with the Makinde camp had adopted confidence-building measures, including postponing key meetings and moderating public statements to create room for dialogue.

Although he noted that the initial gestures were not immediately reciprocated, Turaki confirmed that both sides have now begun engaging each other.

“I can unequivocally confirm that, as of today, leaders on both sides have broken the ice and are exploring various pathways towards a lasting resolution,” he said.

The PDP also indicated readiness to withdraw pending legal cases once a political agreement is reached.

“As soon as we reach agreeable terms, we will willingly withdraw all cases, whether at the Federal High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, or elsewhere, to give peace a chance,” Turaki added.

He reassured party aspirants that despite the crisis, the PDP would present candidates for all elective positions, while urging members to avoid actions capable of derailing the reconciliation process.

“We are willing to bend as far as our necks and backs allow… PDP will not die,” he said.

Turaki further disclosed that certain individuals allegedly working against peace within the party had been identified and removed, describing the PDP as a critical opposition force committed to democratic accountability.

The party leadership also passed a vote of confidence on Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed for their roles during the crisis, while thanking members for continued support.

With dialogue now underway, political observers say the durability of the peace efforts will be crucial in determining the PDP’s strength heading into the 2027 elections.
