Kano Deputy Governor Gwarzo Resigns Amid Impeachment Move

Aminu Gwarzo has stepped down as deputy governor of Kano State, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure amid mounting political pressure.
His resignation was confirmed on Friday evening by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Shuaibu.
The development follows moves by the Kano State House of Assembly to begin impeachment proceedings against him earlier this month.
Lawmakers had accused Gwarzo of gross misconduct, abuse of office, breach of public trust and financial mismanagement.
During plenary on March 5, the Majority Leader of the House, Lawan Dala, read the notice of impeachment, alleging that Gwarzo diverted funds meant for local government councils while he served as commissioner for local government.
According to him, the former deputy governor “wilfully participated in the diversion of funds allocated to local government administrations for purposes other than those for which they were appropriated.”
The crisis surrounding Gwarzo had also taken a political turn in recent weeks. In February, the assembly dismissed reports that the impeachment move was linked to his alleged refusal to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This came after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, along with members of his cabinet and lawmakers in the state, defected from the NNPP to the APC in January.
Gwarzo’s resignation is seen as a move that may ease tensions within the state’s political space, though it remains unclear who will be named as his replacement.
