American Missionary Condemns Plateau Killings, Faults Tinubu Over Insecurity

An American missionary, Alex Barbir, has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the recent killings in Plateau State, describing the incident as unacceptable and raising concerns about security in the country.

Gunmen suspected to be terrorists had on Sunday attacked the Gari Ya Waye community in Angwan Rukuba area of Jos, Plateau State, killing several residents.

The incident, which occurred on Palm Sunday, sparked protests on Monday as angry residents took to the streets demanding urgent action to end recurring violence in the state.

In a video circulating on social media platform X, Barbir expressed outrage over the attack, accusing the government of failing to adequately protect citizens.

“In Rukuba, they just murdered innocent people on Palm Sunday. Where is the response? As people are being killed, there must be accountability,” he said.

The video has since drawn widespread reactions, reigniting debate over insecurity and the safety of communities, particularly in parts of northern Nigeria.

Barbir’s remarks also referenced broader concerns about violence affecting Christian communities, a claim that has remained a subject of controversy in both local and international circles.

In October, former United States President Donald Trump had designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over reported killings of Christians, a position that generated diplomatic and political discussions at the time.

However, the Nigerian government has consistently rejected allegations of religious persecution or genocide, maintaining that the security challenges in the country are complex and not driven by a targeted campaign against any religious group.

The Plateau attack adds to a series of violent incidents in the region, with residents and stakeholders continuing to call for stronger security measures and lasting solutions to the crisis.
