16-Year-Old Girl Delivers Grandfather’s Baby in Niger

Not the exact image of the teenager, just something similar to depict the situation.

A 16-year-old girl in Niger State has given birth to a baby boy allegedly fathered by her grandfather, Musa Gado, with the paternity confirmed through a DNA test.

The case, which has since been handed over to security authorities, was first reported to the state’s Child Rights Protection and Enforcement Agency in October 2025 by the girl’s father and a community leader.

At the time of the report, the teenager was already about six months pregnant. She was taken into protective custody by the agency, where she remained until she delivered in December 2025.

The Director-General of the agency, Barrister Uma Mohammed, said the girl was immediately placed under care to ensure her safety and that of the unborn child.

“When she came, she said she was already six months pregnant. We conducted medical checks and took her to the hospital. She remained in our custody throughout to protect her and the baby,” she said.

According to her, there were alleged attempts to terminate the pregnancy before the matter was officially reported, but these were unsuccessful.

Mohammed said the agency later agreed with all parties involved, including the suspect, to conduct a DNA test after the child was born.

“The alleged perpetrator agreed to bear the cost of the DNA test, which was conducted in Gwagwalada,” she said.

She explained that the test, completed about five weeks later, returned a 99.999 per cent probability confirming Musa Gado as the father of the child.

Following the result, the agency said the matter was transferred to the police for investigation and prosecution. The suspect is currently in custody.

The Niger State Police Command confirmed the arrest, saying investigations are ongoing.

Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun said, “The case was reported to the command, a DNA test was conducted, and the suspect is in custody. Investigation is ongoing and he will be prosecuted.”

A civil society organisation, Global Promoters for Community Initiatives, said it would ensure the case is pursued to its legal conclusion.

Its Project Director, Olasukanmi Kalejaiye, commended the intervention of the child protection agency and pledged continued monitoring of the case.

Authorities said both mother and child remain under protective care as legal proceedings continue.
