Former Ondo Governor Mimiko Quits PDP

Former Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending years of association with the opposition party and triggering fresh speculation about his next political destination.
His resignation was contained in a letter dated April 10, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 7 in Ondo West Local Government Area, where he stated that his decision followed careful reflection and prolonged absence from active party participation.
Mimiko explained that his limited engagement in recent party activities had made it necessary to clarify his political position, stressing that he could no longer continue as a member of the PDP.
In the letter, the former governor noted that his decision was taken purely for personal reasons and without any bitterness toward individuals or the party structure.
“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), effective April 10, 2026, for strictly personal reasons,” he wrote.
“As you are aware, I have distanced myself from party activities for some time. This period allowed me to reflect and consult widely before arriving at this decision.
“I remain committed to the well-being of our country and its democratic process and will continue to engage with like-minded individuals to promote these values.
“Let me also state that this decision is taken without any ill will toward anyone, and I wish the party success in its future endeavours.”
The development was confirmed by his former Chief Press Secretary, Eni Akinsola, who acknowledged that the resignation letter had been submitted, though he declined to comment on the ex-governor’s possible political direction going forward.
Mimiko’s exit has, however, fuelled political discussions within Ondo State and beyond, with sources suggesting he may be weighing options in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), especially amid reports of recent engagements with President Bola Tinubu.
While no official confirmation has been made regarding his next move, political observers say the development could reshape alignments ahead of future electoral contests.
