FRSC Raises Alarm Over Attacks on Personnel, Edo Assault Suspect Arrested

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned motorists and members of the public against assaulting its operatives, following the arrest of a suspect linked to an attack on a patrol team in Edo State.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, issued the warning in a statement on Thursday by the Corps Public Education Officer at the FRSC Headquarters, Abuja, Osondu Ohaeri, stressing that the agency would not tolerate any form of violence against its personnel.

The incident occurred in the early hours of April 11, 2026, when an FRSC patrol team from the RS5.1 Edo Sector Command stopped a vehicle for a seat belt violation. According to the Corps, the situation escalated after the driver allegedly fled while an officer was still engaged in enforcement.

The driver was said to have mobilised a group of commercial tricycle operators who attacked the officers.

In the ensuing chaos, one of the marshals was reportedly pushed into a gutter and assaulted, while the team leader also sustained injuries. The suspect fled the scene immediately after the attack.

Following a coordinated effort involving the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, the suspect was tracked and arrested. Authorities said he has since admitted to the offence and expressed remorse.

“The Corps Marshal emphasizes that assault on law enforcement officers is a serious criminal offence and will be met with the full weight of the law,” the statement said.

While noting the suspect’s admission, the FRSC said legal processes would proceed in line with established procedures to ensure accountability and deter similar incidents.

The Corps commended the swift response and collaboration of security agencies in apprehending the suspect, describing it as a demonstration of effective inter-agency cooperation.

It also urged members of the public to cooperate with FRSC operatives and avoid resorting to violence, advising that grievances should be channelled through appropriate complaint mechanisms.

The injured officer is currently receiving medical attention and is said to be in stable condition.

Reaffirming its mandate, the FRSC said it remains committed to promoting road safety and protecting its personnel, adding that all acts of aggression against its officers would be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.
