Kwara Files 20-Count Charge Against Saraki, Ahmed Over Offa Robbery Case

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki

The Kwara State Government has filed a 20-count criminal charge against former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and former Governor, Abdulfatai Ahmed, over their alleged roles in the 2018 Offa bank robbery incident that left several people dead.

Also listed in the charge are Yusuf Abdulwahab, a former Chief of Staff to Ahmed, and an aide, Alabi Olalekan.

Court documents filed at the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin accuse the defendants of criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, and alleged support for individuals convicted in connection with the deadly armed robbery attack that occurred in Offa in April 2018.

The charge, marked KWS/114C/26, was filed on April 9, 2026, by the Kwara State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ibrahim Sulyman. The defendants are expected to be formally served with the charge on April 17, 2026.

The development comes on the heels of an appellate court decision which affirmed the conviction of key suspects linked to the robbery, including Ayo Akinnibosun.

During earlier proceedings, Akinnibosun had reportedly made confessional statements alleging links to a political structure associated with Saraki, a claim that has remained central to public discourse around the case.

The defendants are scheduled to be arraigned before Justice Haleemah Salman of the Kwara State High Court on June 4, 2026.

Part of the charge alleges culpable homicide punishable under Section 221 of the Penal Code, CAP P4, Laws of Kwara State, 2006. It specifically referenced the killing of Inspector Oanjuma Yusuf during the armed attack.

If found guilty, the accused face penalties up to capital punishment under the applicable provisions of the law.

The Offa robbery, which involved coordinated attacks on banks and led to multiple deaths including that of police officers, remains one of the most widely referenced violent crimes in Nigeria’s recent history.

Authorities say the case underscores ongoing efforts to ensure accountability in unresolved aspects of the incident as judicial processes continue.
