Jimoh Ibrahim Submits Credentials to UN Chief as Nigeria’s Ambassador

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has formally presented his letters of credence to António Guterres, officially taking up his post at the global body.
The ceremony, which held on Monday at the UN Headquarters in New York, was confirmed on Tuesday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who described it as a crucial step in Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement.
With the presentation, Ibrahim is now fully accredited to represent Nigeria at the United Nations, where he will advance the country’s positions on key global issues and participate in multilateral negotiations.
A letter of credence is a formal instrument issued by a head of state to validate an ambassador’s authority, enabling the envoy to act officially on behalf of their country.
Ibrahim’s appointment was announced in March 2026 by Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of a wider deployment of 65 ambassadors to missions across the world. The list comprised 31 career diplomats and 34 political appointees.
Notable among those appointed were Femi Fani-Kayode, posted to Germany; Isaac Adewole, assigned to Canada; and Olufemi Pedro, deployed to Australia.
Before his appointment, Ibrahim represented Ondo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, having been elected in 2023.
His nomination followed the Senate’s confirmation of ambassadorial nominees in December 2025, after which he was designated to Nigeria’s Permanent Mission in New York.
As Permanent Representative, Ibrahim serves as Nigeria’s chief envoy at the UN, engaging the Secretary-General and other member states on issues spanning peace and security, economic development and international cooperation.
Clarifying the development, Ebienfa said the presentation of credentials completes the formal diplomatic process required for recognition.
“He has presented his letters and it simply means he has started working,” he said.
