Kano to Host Mass Wedding for 1,500 Couples Under Welfare Scheme

The Kano State Government has finalised plans to organise a mass wedding for 1,500 couples as part of its social intervention programme aimed at supporting vulnerable residents.
The initiative, popularly known as Auren Gata, is being implemented under the administration of Governor Abba Yusuf and is designed to assist individuals willing to start families but constrained by economic challenges.
The Deputy Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Mujahideen Aminudeen, disclosed this in an interview on Thursday, noting that preparations for the exercise are already at an advanced stage.
According to him, the decision to scale up the programme followed the success of previous editions, which he said delivered positive social outcomes.
He explained that Governor Yusuf has directed that all arrangements be concluded before the end of May to ensure smooth implementation.
The scheme, Aminudeen said, is part of broader efforts to promote social stability and provide structured support for marriage within the state.
He added that prospective participants are required to follow established procedures, including securing endorsement from traditional leaders in their communities and demonstrating mutual consent to marry.
The official stressed that participation in the programme is voluntary, dismissing claims that the board imposes partners on individuals.
“No one is forced into the programme. It is based on willingness and proper verification,” he said.
He further disclosed that intending couples will undergo medical screening, including tests for HIV status, genotype compatibility and other health checks, to ensure the well-being of participants.
Additional measures, such as pregnancy tests for female applicants, are also part of the process to uphold dignity and proper conduct throughout the exercise.
Observers say the initiative reflects the state government’s continued use of social programmes to address economic pressures affecting family formation and community cohesion.
