The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has denied reports suggesting it is courting prominent opposition figures, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Secretary, Barr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the party said the narrative stemmed from a fake X (formerly Twitter) account impersonating its official handle.
The party warned Nigerians to disregard any such reports, noting that it does not engage in selective lobbying of individuals for political positions.
“Please, ignore any report, either in the traditional media or social media claiming that the Nigerian Democratic Congress is lobbying any specific individual or group to contest election on the platform of the party,” the statement said.
According to the NDC, the misleading posts were traced to “a rogue X account parodying the verified handle of the NDC, with our colours, logo and all,” adding that it had previously alerted the public about the existence of the fake account.
While acknowledging that the account might be run by a supporter or an unaffiliated individual, the party stressed that it does not reflect its official position.
“We stated then, and do restate now, that posts made from it are not official NDC positions,” the statement added, urging members of the public and the media to verify information through its verified X handle.
The clarification follows earlier reports that the party had opened a window for Obi and Kwankwaso to join its platform and secure its presidential ticket ahead of the next election cycle. The claim, which gained traction online, featured a post showing both politicians alongside the caption “Nigeria will be OK,” sparking speculation about a possible alliance.
The development came amid ongoing political realignments and the emergence of the “OK Movement,” a support-driven initiative aimed at promoting a joint ticket involving the two opposition figures.
However, the NDC maintained that its platform remains open to all Nigerians without preference for any individual.
“We thank Nigerians for their overwhelming support, even within the few weeks of our existence as a political party,” the statement noted.
The party called on Nigerians interested in its ideology and vision to freely join and participate in its activities, including contesting elections on its platform.
“We invite every Nigerian desirous of positive change, and every lover of multi-party democracy to join the NDC, work for the party and feel free to contest elections on its platform,” it said.
It also made a special appeal to women and persons living with disabilities to take advantage of the opportunity, describing the party as inclusive and open.
The NDC further reiterated its commitment to democratic values, stating that it is “an ideological party committed to the service of Nigeria and Nigerians.”
The statement comes at a time of heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 , with opposition partielectionses exploring alliances and strategies to strengthen their chances, even as debates continue over electoral timelines and internal party preparations.
By distancing itself from the viral claims, the NDC appears to be reinforcing its stance as a broad-based platform rather than one driven by individual political calculations.
