Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in the state, a move that signals fresh political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Fubara announced his decision in a personally signed statement on Wednesday, saying the step followed wide consultations with his family, political associates and close allies.
He said although the decision was not easy, it was taken in the interest of party unity and the stability of Rivers State.
“After deep reflection and extensive consultations with my family, friends, and associates, I have taken the difficult but necessary decision to withdraw from the APC governorship primaries,” the governor stated.
He added that he would fully support whoever eventually emerges as the party’s candidate in the forthcoming primary election.
“I do so with a full heart and with a firm commitment to support whoever emerges as the candidate of our great party,” Fubara said.
The governor’s withdrawal comes amid heightened political manoeuvring within Rivers APC as aspirants intensify consultations ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
Fubara stressed that leadership sometimes requires sacrifice, noting that personal ambition must give way to broader collective interests.
According to him, Rivers State remains the priority above individual political aspirations.
“Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” he said.
Political observers say the development could reshape internal party dynamics in Rivers APC as the race for the governorship ticket narrows and negotiations intensify among stakeholders.
