The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebration across Nigeria.
The announcement was made on Monday in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The government said the declaration reflects its respect for the religious beliefs and spiritual traditions of Nigerian Muslims, who join others across the world in observing the annual festival.
Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant celebrations in Islam, symbolising obedience, faith, and devotion to God, as well as compassion and charity towards humanity.
In the statement, the Minister conveyed the Federal Government’s warm felicitations to Muslim faithful in Nigeria and those in the diaspora, wishing them a peaceful and fulfilling celebration.
“Eid-ul-Adha is a festival of deep spiritual significance, grounded in the values of sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion for one’s fellow man,” the statement read.
The government urged Nigerians to use the festive period for prayers and sober reflection, calling for divine guidance for the country in its ongoing efforts to strengthen peace, security, and economic prosperity.
It further encouraged citizens to embrace unity and peaceful coexistence, stressing that the celebration should serve as a reminder of shared humanity and national brotherhood.
“In the spirit of brotherhood, shared humanity, and national unity, the Federal Government wishes all Muslims a peaceful, blessed, and joyous celebration,” the statement added.
The Ministry of Interior reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering religious harmony and ensuring that all citizens, regardless of faith, continue to live together in peace and mutual respect.
