Rangers International of Enugu have been crowned champions of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) for a record-equalling ninth time after edging Ikorodu City 2–1 in a tense season finale at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos.
The Coal City side sealed the title with a disciplined performance on Sunday, finishing the season on 68 points, just one ahead of Rivers United, who also secured victory in their final fixture. The triumph confirms Rangers’ second league crown in three seasons, further cementing their status as one of Nigeria’s most decorated clubs alongside Enyimba.
In a decisive encounter that doubled as both title decider and continental qualification battle, Rangers struck twice through their captain, Chidiebere Nwobodo, who delivered in both halves to secure the crucial win. The skipper opened scoring in the 30th minute with a composed finish before adding a second from a rebound to put the visitors firmly in control.
Ikorodu City pulled one back in the second half to raise tensions inside the Lagos arena, but Rangers held firm to claim all three points and spark celebrations among travelling supporters. The match drew high-profile attention, with National Sports Commission chairman Shehu Dikko and director-general Bukola Olopade among dignitaries in attendance.
The victory ensures Rangers will represent Nigeria in the CAF Champions League next season alongside Rivers United.
While Rangers celebrated continental qualification and domestic glory, the biggest shock of the campaign came from the opposite end of the table, where defending champions Remo Stars were relegated from the NPFL.
The Ikenne-based side’s drop was confirmed after Kun Khalifat defeated Wikki Tourists 3–1, rendering Remo Stars’ own results insufficient to save them despite a late push in their final fixture against Bendel Insurance.
Remo Stars had entered the season as reigning champions but endured a turbulent campaign marked by defensive instability and inconsistent form. Their fate was sealed after failing to secure the victory needed to survive, finishing level on 47 points with Kwara United but falling behind on goal difference.
In a dramatic finale, Remo Stars initially led in their match as rain disrupted play in Owerri, with the pitch briefly threatened by waterlogging before action resumed after a lengthy delay. However, Bendel Insurance struck deep into added time to deny them a lifeline, confirming their historic relegation.
The Sky Blues’ exit marks an unprecedented moment in NPFL history, as they become the first reigning champions to suffer relegation in the very season following their title win. Their drop also ends a five-year spell in the top flight, sending them back to the Nigeria National League.
Alongside Remo Stars, Wikki Tourists, Bayelsa United, and El-Kanemi Warriors also dropped from the elite division in a season of dramatic twists and late-season heartbreaks.
