Princess Damilola Sonayon-James

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reportedly settled for Princess Damilola Sonayon-James as its deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 Lagos State governorship election, completing a ticket expected to shape the party’s strategy in the forthcoming poll.

Party sources confirmed that Sonayon-James will run alongside the incumbent Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, who emerged as the party’s governorship candidate ahead of the election.

The development, according to insiders, reflects a calculated move by the ruling party to strengthen its electoral base across Lagos State, particularly in the Badagry axis where the new deputy governorship candidate commands significant political influence.

Sonayon-James, a grassroots politician and current Assistant State Woman Leader of the APC in Lagos, has built a reputation for community engagement, mobilisation and advocacy for inclusive development over the years.

She is also known for her work in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practice as well as sustainability risk consultancy, with experience spanning public service delivery, policy engagement and community development programmes.

A member of the royal family of Kweme Kingdom in Badagry West Local Council Development Area, her background is seen as a factor that enhances her acceptance among traditional institutions and local communities within the division.

Before her elevation to state-level politics, she served as Supervisory Councillor for Agriculture and Social Services in Badagry West LCDA, where she was involved in grassroots governance and social intervention initiatives.

Although the APC is yet to officially announce the ticket, party insiders said the formal unveiling of the Hamzat–Sonayon-James combination is expected in the coming days.

If confirmed, Sonayon-James would become one of the most prominent political figures from the Badagry area to feature on a major governorship ticket in Lagos State, boosting the region’s visibility in the state’s political power structure ahead of 2027.
