Suspected armed men on Sunday night attacked operatives of the Anambra State Police Command, killing at least two officers in a deadly ambush along the Awa–Ndiukwuenu–Ufuma Road in Anambra State.
The incident, which disrupted a period of relative calm in the state, reportedly occurred when the officers on patrol were suddenly confronted and came under heavy gunfire from unidentified attackers.
Anambra had recorded months of reduced violent incidents following intensified security operations against criminal gangs and armed groups operating in parts of the state.
Eyewitness accounts suggested that the attackers struck without warning, leaving the bodies of two policemen on the road while a police patrol van was seen parked nearby.
A commercial tricycle operator, who narrowly escaped the scene, said he was riding along the route when he heard sustained gunfire ahead and abandoned his vehicle to take cover in a nearby bush.
In a voice note shared afterwards, the keke rider described returning to the scene after the shooting subsided and discovering the aftermath of the attack.
“Two policemen are lying on the road here, and their police van is parked by the roadside. I think one of them is still alive. I’m sending this so authorities can come quickly,” he said in distress.
The attack has raised fresh concerns about security along rural routes in the state, particularly the stretch connecting Awa, Ndiukwuenu and Ufuma communities.
As of the time of filing this report, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, could not be reached for official confirmation or details on the incident.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and security agencies are yet to issue an official statement.
