U.S. President Donald Trump abruptly ended a live television interview after a heated exchange with NBC anchor Kristen Welker over his repeated claims that American elections were rigged.
The tense encounter unfolded during Trump’s appearance on the NBC programme *Meet the Press* in Wisconsin, where he was questioned about allegations of election fraud, including claims relating to the 2020 presidential election and recent primary elections in California.
Trouble began when Welker repeatedly asked the president to provide evidence to support his assertions that electoral processes had been manipulated.
Trump insisted that elections had been compromised and alleged that similar practices were continuing.
“The election was rigged. It was a dirty election. And it’s happening again right now in California… They’re cheating on the election,” he said.
Pressed further on what evidence he had to back the allegations, Trump replied: “All I have to do is look… All I have to do is listen, and I listen to people, and let’s see what happens.”
As the exchange became increasingly confrontational, the president turned his criticism toward the media, accusing NBC and other major news organisations of bias.
“They’re crooked just like you’re crooked; your press is crooked. And Meet the Press is crooked,” Trump said.
He also accused other television networks, including ABC, CBS and CNN, of unfair coverage.
Welker, however, continued to seek proof of the claims, prompting a sharper response from the president.
“You’re either crooked, or you’re stupid. Let’s call it quits. Because I’ve had enough. Thank you, darling,” Trump said before bringing the interview to an abrupt end.
As the president prepared to leave, Welker reminded him that she had travelled to Wisconsin specifically for the interview.
“I traveled all the way to Wisconsin for this interview,” she said.
Trump has consistently maintained that irregularities affected previous elections, particularly the 2020 presidential contest. He has often pointed to affidavits, statistical analyses, voting procedures and delayed ballot counts as grounds for his concerns.
However, election officials, independent observers and multiple court rulings have repeatedly stated that there is no evidence of widespread fraud capable of changing the outcome of the 2020 election.
The latest confrontation is expected to fuel renewed debate over election integrity claims and the increasingly strained relationship between Trump and sections of the American media.
