England’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026 have suffered an unexpected setback after training equipment, including boots and footballs, was reportedly stolen ahead of their tournament opener against Croatia.

The incident occurred after team equipment was transported to their base at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, where the delivery vehicles were allegedly broken into before the squad’s arrival.

According to reports, the stolen items include training balls and players’ boots, with officials still carrying out an inventory check to determine the full extent of the loss.

Local police were quickly deployed to the scene and have since made arrests in connection with the incident, as investigations continue in coordination with the Football Association.

The England squad, led by manager Thomas Tuchel, is expected to arrive in Kansas City ahead of their opening group match against 2018 finalists Croatia.

A report attributed to the BBC said the FA is working to clarify exactly what was taken and assess whether the theft will affect preparations for the crucial fixture.

“England were victims of a theft of their training equipment before their arrival in Kansas City… balls and boots among the items feared to have been taken,” the report noted.

Officials confirmed that police were on site on Friday night, with early indications that two suspects had been arrested in connection with the break-in.

The timing of the incident raises concerns over possible disruption to England’s training schedule, with the squad expected to begin full preparations immediately upon arrival in the United States.

England are aiming to finally end their long wait for a major international trophy, having last won the World Cup in 1966.

Despite reaching the final stages of recent European Championships, including back-to-back final appearances, the team has yet to convert its strong performances into silverware.

This tournament is widely seen as one of England’s strongest opportunities in years, with striker Harry Kane expected to play a central role in their campaign.

England have been drawn in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana and Panama. After facing Croatia, they will meet Ghana on June 23 and Panama on June 27.

The 2026 World Cup, featuring an expanded 48-team format, is set to be the largest in the competition’s history, increasing both expectations and pressure on the participating sides.

For England, however, attention now briefly shifts away from tactics and opponents to ensuring their preparations are not further disrupted by the off-field incident.
