A Nigerian medical graduate, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died after sustaining critical injuries in a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine, just days before she was due to graduate from medical school.

The 23-year-old, who studied at Kharkiv National Medical University, was reportedly injured on June 29 when Russian forces bombed the Kholodnohirskyi district of the city.

She was initially treated in Kharkiv before being transferred to Germany for specialist care. However, she later succumbed to her injuries despite efforts by doctors to save her life.

The university confirmed her death in a statement, describing the young Nigerian as an outstanding student with a passion for learning and service to humanity.

“Nnani Adaobi Marian was a bright, sincere and kind-hearted person. She easily found common ground with people and was distinguished by her thirst for knowledge, hard work and sincere desire to help others,” the institution said.

Adaobi had also broadened her medical training through internships at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom and Biruni University in Türkiye.

Reports indicated that she and her friend, Fatima Huseynova, were on their way to a graduation photoshoot when the airstrike occurred.

Both students were expected to receive their medical degrees the following day.

While Fatima died at the scene of the attack, Adaobi suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital.

The aerial bombardment reportedly struck a roadway in the Kholodnohirskyi district, leaving at least 12 other people injured.

Her death has added to the growing civilian toll of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, which has continued to claim lives and disrupt the education and aspirations of thousands of students caught in the conflict.
