In every generation, there are those who mistake extraordinary commitment for excess. Sadly, that appears to be the wrong narrative being woven around Her Excellency, Bishop Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, the Wife of the Governor of Cross River State.
Some have suggested that she is “doing too much” or “performing the Governor’s duties.” Nothing could be further from the truth.
As a privileged son of Cross River State, a media consultant, and someone who has closely observed her work both through **Humanity Without Borders Empowerment Initiative** and in her distinguished capacity as the Wife of the Governor, I can confidently say that what we are witnessing is not an individual seeking relevance but a woman passionately committed to purpose.
Her Excellency is not competing for authority; she is complementing leadership.
She is not encroaching on anyone’s constitutional responsibilities; she is maximizing the moral influence and humanitarian opportunities that naturally accompany her office.
The true measure of leadership is not merely occupying a position but transforming that position into an instrument of hope. That is precisely what Bishop Eyoanwan Bassey Otu has done. She has elevated the office of the First Lady from ceremonial visibility to meaningful impact, demonstrating that compassion, service, and empathy are among the highest expressions of public leadership.
Across many states, citizens lament First Ladies who remain largely invisible, detached from the struggles of the people, and disconnected from community development. Ironically, when Cross River is blessed with a First Lady who walks among the people, listens to their concerns, empowers women, uplifts children, cares for the elderly, champions the vulnerable, and mobilizes humanitarian interventions, some critics suddenly find fault.
One is compelled to ask:
Is it wrong for a woman to carry the burdens of humanity when she possesses both the heart and the platform to do so?
Does not Proverbs 31:20 declare, “She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy?”
As a helpmate to the Governor, should she not naturally complement his vision by drawing attention to the needs of women, children, the elderly, and the vulnerable?
Is supporting the Governor’s developmental agenda now being mistaken for taking over his office?
Should compassion suddenly become a crime simply because it is visible?
Would Cross River truly be
better served by a First Lady who remains silent and inactive while societal needs continue to grow?
Should we discourage a woman who has chosen to transform privilege into purpose, or should we celebrate and support leadership that leaves a lasting legacy of compassion, service, and hope for generations to come?
The answers are obvious.
Her Excellency’s activities neither diminish nor replace the responsibilities of Governor Senator Bassey Otu. Rather, they reinforce the broader vision of a people-centered administration where governance is strengthened through empathy, inclusion, and social intervention.
Every successful leader benefits from trusted voices around them. A compassionate First Lady who understands the yearnings of women, families, young people, and the elderly is not a liability but an invaluable asset. When the Governor listens to such perspectives, governance becomes more responsive, more humane, and ultimately more effective.
Those who genuinely desire progress should encourage purposeful service instead of discouraging it. Constructive criticism is healthy in every democracy, but criticism divorced from facts only distracts from meaningful development.
Cross River State deserves leaders who are focused on solutions, not needless distractions.
Today, Governor Senator Bassey Otu and Her Excellency Bishop Eyoanwan Bassey Otu remain committed to building a more inclusive, compassionate, and prosperous Cross River. What they deserve from us is not needless controversy but the collective goodwill, prayers, constructive support, and peaceful environment necessary to deliver on their mandate.
I therefore call on all Cross Riverians—regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity, or personal interest—to join hands with this purposeful administration in advancing the progress of our dear state. Let us choose unity over division, substance over sentiment, and service over unnecessary criticism.
As the timeless African proverb reminds us:
“The tree that bears fruit is the one that attracts stones.”
History does not remember those who criticized sincere service from the sidelines; it remembers those who used every opportunity entrusted to them to improve the lives of others.
Her Excellency Bishop Eyoanwan Bassey Otu is doing exactly that.
May purpose continue to triumph over prejudice, and may Cross River State continue to rise under the purposeful leadership of Governor Senator Bassey Otu and his compassionate partner in service.
