With the August 15 Osun State governorship election drawing closer, Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Campaign Council, Governor Hope Uzodinma, has charged members of the party’s campaign machinery to concentrate on one objective; winning the election.
Uzodinma gave the charge on Monday at the inaugural meeting of the APC National Campaign Council in Abuja, telling members that their appointment was a call to duty rather than an occasion for celebration.
“This meeting is not for merry-making. It is not for any jamboree. It is for people to come and offer service,” he said.
He reminded members that the success of the council would be measured solely by its ability to deliver victory for the party’s governorship candidate in the August 15 poll.
“You have only one mission; to win the election. Everything else can come after the election,” Uzodinma said.
The APC recently constituted a 276-member National Campaign Council and 12 specialised sub-committees to coordinate its campaign ahead of the Osun governorship election.
The council, chaired by Uzodinma, also has Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas as co-chairmen, while Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin serves as secretary.
The sub-committees are expected to oversee areas including election planning, grassroots mobilisation, finance, logistics, media, security, youth, women and persons with disabilities.
At the meeting, the Imo State governor directed all sub-committees to conclude their meetings before Thursday and submit practical recommendations that would strengthen the party’s campaign across the state.
He instructed chairmen of the various committees to forward their reports and areas requiring intervention to the council’s national secretary so that the Central Working Committee could take necessary action.
Uzodinma also tasked the finance sub-committee with mobilising financial support from party members and other stakeholders willing to contribute to the APC’s campaign efforts.
According to him, members did not need to introduce themselves since the party had already published the composition of the campaign council.
He, however, encouraged participants to make observations and seek clarifications on issues that could enhance the effectiveness of the campaign.
The APC inaugurated the campaign council to coordinate strategy, mobilisation and stakeholder engagement ahead of the governorship election, which the party is seeking to win from the incumbent administration.
