Keffe D Found Guilty Of Tupac Shakur’s 1996 Murder

Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a former Los Angeles gang leader, has been found guilty of the 1996 murder of American rap icon Tupac Shakur, bringing a three-decade-old case to a dramatic close.

A Las Vegas jury reached the verdict on Monday after deliberating for only a few hours, finding the 63-year-old Davis guilty of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon.

“Count one, murder with use of a deadly weapon, guilty of first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon,” the jury foreperson announced.

Davis, who faces the possibility of life imprisonment without parole, told Judge Carli Kierny after the verdict that he intended to appeal the decision.

The former leader of the South Side Compton Crips was accused of organising the shooting after his nephew was involved in a confrontation with members of Shakur’s entourage at a Las Vegas casino.

Prosecutor Binu Palal told the court during closing arguments that Davis regarded the confrontation as an insult that demanded retaliation.

“Duane Davis, in the culture of gangs, could not let that stand,” Palal said, alleging that Davis obtained a firearm, assembled his associates and went after Shakur.

Shakur, 25, was in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, to watch former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson fight. About two hours after the casino confrontation, a white Cadillac pulled alongside the BMW carrying Shakur at a traffic light.

Prosecutors said Davis handed a gun to another occupant of the Cadillac and directed the person to shoot Shakur. The rapper was struck by gunfire and died six days later.

Marion “Suge” Knight, co-founder of Death Row Records, was driving the BMW and was also wounded in the attack.

Davis was the only surviving occupant of the Cadillac and eventually became the sole person charged in connection with Shakur’s killing.

The murder remained one of the most prominent unsolved cases in American music for decades, generating widespread speculation among fans over the identity of the gunman and the motive behind the killing.

The investigation gained fresh momentum after the publication of Davis’s 2019 memoir, *Compton Street Legend*, in which he made claims about his involvement in the events surrounding Shakur’s death.

Davis had also spoken about the killing in interviews with law enforcement and the media over the years. Prosecutors relied on some of those statements during the trial, presenting them as evidence of his involvement.

He later denied responsibility and pleaded not guilty.

During closing arguments, however, defence lawyer Michael Sanft dismissed Davis’s previous accounts as unreliable, arguing that his client had fabricated details partly to generate publicity for his memoir.

“You’re reading a book that is fiction and not fact,” Sanft told jurors, maintaining that there was no credible evidence linking Davis to the murder apart from his own statements.

Davis’s lawyers had previously sought to prevent prosecutors from introducing his memoir and a 2008 police interview as evidence, but the attempts were unsuccessful.

Shakur’s killing occurred during a period of intense rivalry between the East Coast and West Coast hip-hop scenes. The rapper had become one of the most influential figures in American music, with songs including *California Love* and *All Eyez on Me*.

Born in New York and raised partly in Harlem and Baltimore, Shakur became closely associated with California’s hip-hop culture after joining Los Angeles-based Death Row Records.

He was the son of Afeni Shakur, a former member of the Black Panther Party, and rose from a controversial young rapper to an international cultural figure before his death.

The verdict ends a long-running legal saga surrounding one of hip-hop’s most enduring mysteries, though Davis has indicated that the case will continue through the appeal process.
