Moses Alalade has resumed office as the National Treasurer of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), outlining a vision focused on skills development, innovation, opportunity and constructive student representation.
Alalade assumed office following his inauguration and swearing-in alongside members of the newly elected NAUS National Executive Council in Abuja on September 22, 2026.
The new National Treasurer said his tenure would seek to create practical pathways through which university students can acquire relevant skills, access opportunities, build networks and prepare for the changing demands of the economy.
He pledged to work with the NAUS leadership, student representatives, universities, government institutions, development partners and private-sector organisations to advance initiatives that respond to the needs and aspirations of Nigerian students.
“My leadership philosophy is rooted in service, opportunity, collaboration, responsibility and measurable impact. I believe student leadership should go beyond representation to create practical pathways for students to learn, develop skills, access opportunities, build enterprises, engage institutions and contribute meaningfully to society,” Alalade said.
He identified education and skills development, employability, entrepreneurship, innovation, digital opportunities and youth development as key areas of interest during his tenure.
Alalade also highlighted the growing importance of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, in preparing students for a rapidly changing workplace and global economy.
He commended the efforts of the Federal Government and the Federal Ministry of Education to strengthen practical, skills-oriented and industry-relevant learning, stressing that student leadership had a role to play in helping young people understand and maximise available opportunities.
The NAUS National Treasurer said effective student representation should extend beyond advocacy to creating platforms that enable students to develop capacities and participate meaningfully in national development.
He further disclosed his plans to advance a broader youth development platform, LIGHT, which stands for Leveraging Innovation, Governance and Human-Capital Transformation.
The platform is anchored on five principles: Institutional Leadership; Innovation and Sustainable Development; Growth and Empowerment; Holistic Policy Engagement; and Transformative Opportunities.
One of its major initiatives is the proposed LIGHT Conference 2027, which is expected to bring together young leaders, students, innovators, development actors and other stakeholders for dialogue, learning, networking and access to opportunities.
The conference is planned to provide a platform for discussions around leadership, technology, human-capital development, climate action, security and sustainable development.
For Alalade, the LIGHT initiative reflects a leadership philosophy that places emphasis on creating opportunities, strengthening institutions and equipping young people to make meaningful contributions to society.
He said the success of student leadership should ultimately be measured by the opportunities created, people reached, partnerships built and systems strengthened during a tenure.
“As National Treasurer, I look forward to working constructively with the leadership and structures of NAUS and with stakeholders who share a commitment to the development of our students and young people,” he added.
Alalade, who is also President of Switch Support Network, said he would continue supporting initiatives that expand access to learning, skills, innovation, youth development and sustainable opportunities.
The new NAUS National Treasurer expressed appreciation to colleagues, stakeholders and members of the student community for their support, while pledging to serve with responsibility, humility and purpose.
