The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has registered 96,085 new voters in Anambra State ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.
The Commission has also extended the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by three days in response to appeals from residents.
This was disclosed in a statement signed on Thursday, by the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, following the Commission’s weekly meeting held in Abuja.
According to Olumekun, the CVR, which began nine days ago across the 326 registration centres in the state, has recorded impressive turnout and was conducted peacefully.
“As of Wednesday 16th July 2025, 96,085 new voters have successfully registered in nine days. On average, the Commission registered over 10,600 voters per day,” he stated.
In addition to the fresh registrants, INEC also recorded 12,595 applications for transfer of registration both within and outside the state, while 7,061 individuals applied for the update of their records or replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
While the exercise was initially scheduled to end on Thursday, the Commission has now extended it by three days, allowing more eligible voters to participate.
“In response to appeal from citizens, the Commission hereby extends the exercise for three more days. It will now end on Sunday 20th July 2025,” the statement added.
INEC also announced that it will display the register for claims and objections after the conclusion of the CVR, in line with legal provisions, and carry out further data cleanup using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).
Providing preliminary demographics of the new registrants, the Commission revealed that “56,017 (58%) of new registrants are female while 50,429 (52.48%) are young people between the ages of 18 and 34.”
In a related development, the Commission said it has continued to receive applications from groups seeking registration as political parties.
“Meanwhile, the Commission has received five more letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties. This brings the number received so far to 134,” Olumekun disclosed.
He said the proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leaderships of the new associations have been published on INEC’s website and other platforms for public information.
“The Commission will continue to keep the citizens up to date on all its activities,” he assured.
