FG Renames University of Maiduguri After Buhari

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The announcement was made during an expanded Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, as part of tributes paid to the late leader.

Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London and was buried on Wednesday in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State.

President Tinubu described Buhari as a patriot who served Nigeria with dedication both in and out of uniform.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development on his official X handle, writing:

“President Tinubu renames University of Maiduguri as Muhammadu Buhari University. President Tinubu announced the honour at the session of tributes of the Federal Executive Council to his late predecessor.”

The meeting was attended by serving and former ministers who offered glowing tributes to Buhari, recalling his years of leadership and commitment to national development.

The renaming is one of several posthumous honours being considered for the former president.
