Former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has lost his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai.

She reportedly died on Friday afternoon, though details about her death were still unclear as at the time of filing this report.

Her grandson, Bello El-Rufai, confirmed the news in a message shared on Facebook.

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. From Allah we came and to Him we shall return. I wish to inform the public of the passing of my grandmother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who died a few hours ago,” he wrote.

He added, “She is the mother of our father, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. We are grateful for the life she lived and we pray that Almighty Allah grants her soul eternal rest. On behalf of the family, we ask for your prayers.”

The death comes at a time when Nasir El-Rufai is facing a legal battle.

He is currently in custody after being arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on a 10-count charge bordering on alleged conversion of public property and money laundering.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

At the last sitting of the Federal High Court Kaduna, the presiding judge, Rilwanu Aikawa, adjourned the hearing of his bail application to March 31 after listening to arguments from both the prosecution and defence.
