ICPC, EFCC, CCB Unite for Commonwealth Anti-Corruption Research Drive

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), in partnership with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), has launched a two-day training workshop to kick-start the Commonwealth Africa Region Anti-Corruption Research Project in Nigeria.
The initiative, held at the ICPC Headquarters in Abuja, seeks to identify corruption typologies and trends across Commonwealth African countries, enhance collaboration among anti-corruption agencies, and strengthen data-driven strategies to tackle graft on the continent.
Declaring the workshop open, ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, represented by the Commission’s Director of Operations, Shehu Yahaya, stressed the crucial role of research in shaping effective anti-corruption policies.
“Corruption is not a singular act; it is a complex ecosystem of behaviours, incentives, and vulnerabilities,” Dr. Aliyu said. “Understanding these typologies is essential for designing targeted, effective, and sustainable anti-corruption strategies.”
He explained that the study, initiated by the Commonwealth Africa Anti-Corruption Centre (CAACC), is designed to offer deeper insights into corruption challenges while fostering knowledge exchange among anti-corruption agencies across the region.
According to him, the exercise represents “a major step forward in building an evidence-based approach to anti-corruption work,” aligning with ICPC’s broader mandate of not only investigating and prosecuting corruption but also preventing it through research, education, and institutional reform.
“The CAACC considers it necessary that major anti-corruption agencies in Nigeria and other Commonwealth African countries collaborate to conduct this study,” Dr. Aliyu added. “The findings will inform policy, uncover patterns, reveal truths, and shape the future of governance in Nigeria and Africa at large.”
The ICPC boss urged participants to take full advantage of the training, emphasizing that beyond building technical skills, the exercise should deepen their ethical commitment and analytical capacity.
The workshop, which draws participants from the ICPC, EFCC, CCB, and other stakeholders, is expected to develop innovative research methods that will deepen the regional fight against corruption and strengthen institutional integrity across Africa.
