12.7 Million Nigerians’ Data Under Scrutiny as NDPC Investigates Temu

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched an investigation into the operations of global e-commerce platform Temu over alleged violations of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act).

The NDPC National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, ordered an immediate probe into the company’s data processing activities following concerns that they may not comply with provisions of the Act.

According to the Commission, the investigation was triggered by issues relating to online surveillance through personal data processing, accountability, data minimisation requirements, transparency, duty of care, and cross-border transfer of personal information.

Preliminary findings by the Commission indicate that Temu processes the personal data of approximately 12.7 million Nigerians. Globally, the platform reportedly records about 70 million daily active users.

The Commission warned that data processors who carry out processing activities on behalf of data controllers without verifying compliance with the NDP Act could also be held liable.

The NDPC stated that it remains committed to protecting the personal data of Nigerians and ensuring that organisations operating within the country adhere strictly to the provisions of the law.

The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine whether the company’s operations align with Nigeria’s data protection regulations and whether any enforcement actions will be taken.
