Nigeria, Germany Deepen Energy Transmission, Infrastructure Cooperation

Nigeria and Germany on Tuesday stepped up discussions on infrastructure development, with a strong focus on energy transmission and distribution, following high-level talks in Abuja.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, received the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annett Günther, in a diplomatic meeting that also covered multilateral cooperation, economic collaboration and security partnerships.
A key highlight of the engagement was Germany’s renewed interest in supporting Nigeria’s efforts to modernize its energy transmission and distribution infrastructure.
Ambassador Günther noted that the sector had been identified during recent presidential engagements as critical to Nigeria’s development.
She said Germany remains committed to backing key projects with investment and technical expertise, expressing optimism that administrative processes would soon be concluded to enable implementation.
Welcoming the German delegation, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to sustain open diplomatic engagement.
He stressed that “Nigeria values continuous dialogue and remains receptive to constructive exchanges at all times,” adding that the Ministry stands prepared to facilitate discussions on issues of mutual interest.
Beyond infrastructure, both envoys discussed reciprocal support in multilateral forums, particularly regarding candidacies to the United Nations Security Council.
Ambassador Günther recalled the 2024 exchange of notes on mutual backing and commended Nigeria’s principled support for Germany’s candidature.
She emphasized Berlin’s long-standing advocacy for multilateralism and reform of the UN system, including stronger African representation on the Security Council.
Responding, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed assured the German envoy that relevant departments within the Ministry would review outstanding documentation and provide necessary clarifications on reciprocal arrangements within the appropriate multilateral framework.
He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to advancing energy sector reforms, infrastructure resilience and sustainable investment frameworks, describing German partnership as important to the country’s economic modernization agenda.
Both sides further reiterated their readiness to deepen security cooperation.
Ambassador Günther stated that Germany “remains prepared to deepen engagement in capacity-building initiatives” aimed at strengthening regional stability and addressing shared security challenges.
The meeting ended with both countries reaffirming their dedication to multilateralism, economic cooperation and institutional coordination, underscoring what officials described as the strategic depth and maturity of Nigeria–Germany relations.
