Nigeria-Niger border set to reopen, Customs on high alert

The Sokoto-Zamfara area command of the Nigeria Customs Service is gearing up for the imminent reopening of the Nigeria-Niger border at Illela Sokoto state.

Kamal Mohammed, the Customs Area Controller, conveyed this readiness during a working visit to the border post, emphasizing that meticulous preparations are underway in anticipation of the final directive.

Addressing stakeholders at the entry point, Mohammed highlighted the significant developments leading to this moment, stating, “With the lift of ECOWAS sanctions on Niger Republic and the subsequent restoration of power supply to Niger Republic, it is on this premise I came to ensure all is set towards the reopening of the Illela border while we await the last order.”

In a bid to foster collaboration and efficiency, the comptroller urged stakeholders and security agencies at the border station to prioritize cooperation, particularly in intelligence sharing and joint operations to safeguard the nation’s borders.

“With collaboration, each agency will be able to effectively and efficiently fulfill its assigned mandate,” he affirmed.

Expressing gratitude to Customs License Agents for their patience during the seven-month border closure, Mohammed acknowledged the challenges faced and reassured, “We know it has not been easy for you, but God willing, it will soon become history.”

As part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR), the Customs Service has initiated the construction of a primary healthcare facility at the border station.

Once completed, this facility will cater to both Customs officers and the local Illela community.

Comptroller Mohammed extended appreciation to the Illela Community for their hospitality and paid homage to the Sarkin Gobir of Gwadabawa, Muhammad Zayyanu. He called on the traditional ruler to advise his subjects against engaging in smuggling activities.
