Photo Mix-Up: Atewe distances self from fraud case, condemns ‘False’ Photo Use

The Media Team of former Nigerian Army General, Emmanuel Atewe, has expressed deep concern and disappointment over a publication by an online platform, Daily Post Nigeria,
titled “N1.65bn fraud: Appeal Court upholds conviction of ex-Army General.”

In a statement issued on Monday, the team said the photograph of General Atewe was wrongly used to illustrate a report that referred to another individual, Umar Mohammed, who was reportedly convicted in connection with financial offences involving Nigerian Army Properties Limited.

The media team stressed that General Atewe has absolutely no connection with the allegations, the case, or the individual mentioned in the report.

According to the statement, the use of his photograph in a story relating to fraud and criminal misappropriation is false, misleading and highly unprofessional.

“This serious editorial lapse by Daily Post has the potential to gravely harm the reputation, integrity and distinguished record of service of General Emmanuel Atewe, who has served the nation with honour and dedication,” the statement said.

It added that associating the retired general’s image with allegations of corruption or criminal conduct without any factual basis was irresponsible .
