30 Students Hospitalized After Strange Chemical Fumes Hits Ogun School

About 30 students and a teacher at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Epe Garage in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, were hospitalised on Wednesday after a suspected chemical odour caused panic during the morning assembly.
The incident disrupted school activities and prompted an immediate emergency response.
The Vice Principal, Mrs Adeola Borogun, clarified that there was no gas explosion.
“Many students began vomiting and fainting, forcing the school management to call for ambulances from the General Hospital, Ijebu Ode,” she said.
Confirming the situation, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Banjo Adeoye, stated that 30 students and a teacher received treatment, adding that most patients were in stable condition.
“The exact chemical substance responsible for the incident has not yet been identified,” he noted.
Permanent Secretary of the Ogun State Ministry of Environment, Dr (Mrs) Kafayat Lawal, explained that officials responded swiftly after receiving a distress call. She said environmental officers had been deployed to assess air quality within the school premises to determine the source of the odour.
The Chairman of Ijebu Ode Local Council, Dare Alebiosu, who visited the hospital, reassured parents and residents.
“All affected students are stable. The situation is calm and under control. Authorities will conduct a full investigation to uncover the cause of the incident,” he said. Alebiosu also advised parents to monitor their children for any unusual symptoms as the probe continues.
The Ogun State Government emphasized that the safety of students remains a priority, and preventive measures will be strengthened to avert similar occurrences in the future.
