Army Debunks Alleged Attack on Bishop Kukah, Sokoto Cathedral

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports of an alleged attack on the residence of Matthew Kukah and the Catholic Cathedral in Sokoto, describing the claims as false and misleading.

The rebuttal follows a social media post circulating on Facebook which claimed that armed men had attacked both the cleric’s residence and the church facility.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Nigerian Army/Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the Army said there was no such incident anywhere in Sokoto State.

“We categorically debunk these unfounded claims as there was no such attack in Sokoto State,” the statement said.

The Army assured that the bishop and the cathedral remain safe, noting that religious activities for the Easter period were ongoing without disruption.

“The safety and security of Bishop Matthew Kukah and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral remain intact. Bishop Kukah is currently fulfilling his Easter duties without any disruption,” Osoba stated.

He added that troops of the division, in collaboration with other security agencies, had maintained a strong security presence across the state to ensure a peaceful festive period.

According to him, “robust security measures are in place to guarantee a peaceful and secure Easter celebration” within the Army’s area of responsibility.

The military also urged members of the public to disregard unverified reports capable of causing panic, reiterating its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the region.
