Ogun 2027: Abiodun Declares Yayi APC Consensus Governorship Candidate
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Monday publicly endorsed Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 governorship election in the state.
The endorsement was made during a strategic meeting of APC leaders and stakeholders held in Abeokuta, where discussions centred on succession planning and the party’s preparations ahead of the next election cycle.
Governor Abiodun, in a video clip from the meeting where he appeared in a light blue agbada and black cap, told party members that a consensus had already been reached on the party’s preferred flag bearer.
“But first, we’ve decided who is deserving as the next flag bearer of our dear state,” the governor said.
Following the announcement, Senator Adeola stood up to acknowledge the declaration as the hall erupted in applause, cheers, and chants of support, accompanied by the blaring of trumpets from supporters present at the gathering.
The meeting drew top APC chieftains and political stakeholders across the state and is viewed as a significant early alignment within the party ahead of the 2027 governorship contest.
Governor Abiodun also used the occasion to reflect on political continuity within the party, stressing the need for unity and cohesion in selecting a successor capable of sustaining the APC’s hold on the state.
He emphasised that internal consensus remains critical to maintaining stability and ensuring continued development across Ogun State.
Senator Adeola, a serving lawmaker and influential political figure within the APC, has long been considered a strong contender in the state’s succession politics, particularly given his grassroots networks and national legislative experience.
Political observers say the governor’s open endorsement could significantly reshape the dynamics of the 2027 race, potentially narrowing the field within the ruling party as consultations continue.
While reactions from other aspirants remain unclear, the development is expected to trigger fresh political realignments within the Ogun APC in the coming months.
