Insecurity Will Stop Two Weeks after Elections – Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday linked the recent spike in insecurity across the country to political activities ahead of forthcoming elections, expressing confidence that the situation would ease shortly after the polls.

Akpabio spoke in Abuja at the inauguration of the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS) corporate headquarters, where he said the security challenges were being fuelled by political interests.

“Insecurity is increasing because election is coming… Immediately after election, two weeks after election, the insecurity will stop. The insecurity is being sponsored by people,” he said.

He also defended the performance of President Bola Tinubu, arguing that the administration’s policies had unsettled its opponents.

According to him, critics of the government were resorting to desperate measures. “People don’t know what to do again,” he said, suggesting that those opposed to the government were behind the rising tension.

Akpabio took a swipe at the opposition, describing it as disorganised, and made a veiled reference to Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election.

“Opposition is in disarray… someone got six million votes and abandoned the party and they are blaming the ruling party,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to remain patient with the current administration. “Let Nigerians be patient… you are doing the right thing,” he added.

The Senate President also commended the head of the revenue agency, describing Zacch Adedeji as widely accepted by Nigerians.

“Even in the Bible people don’t like tax collectors. Zacch has done very well and Nigerians are happy with him,” he said.

President Tinubu, who performed the inauguration of the complex, was joined at the event by top government officials, including Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.

Also present were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, members of the Federal Executive Council, and several state governors, including Babagana Zulum, Charles Soludo, Caleb Mutfwang, Hope Uzodimma, and Usman Ododo.

The newly commissioned NRS headquarters, described by officials as a modern facility, consists of three towers rising 16 floors and is designed to house about 3,000 workers.

The development follows the signing of the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act by President Tinubu in June 2025, which transformed the former Federal Inland Revenue Service into the NRS.
