Benue Mortuary Attendant Arrested for Using Human Leg as Walking Stick

A mortuary attendant identified as Amaobi has been arrested by operatives of the Benue State Police Command after he was allegedly caught using a human leg from a corpse as a walking stick in Agwabi, Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Friday morning and has since thrown the community into shock.
Residents said the suspect, who works in a private mortuary in the area, was spotted moving around with the human body part before heading to a shop to purchase items. His strange behaviour reportedly drew the attention of locals, who confronted him and raised alarm.
He was later handed over to youths in the community before police operatives arrived and took him into custody.
Confirming the arrest, security sources said the suspect was immediately detained after preliminary investigation established that he had unlawfully removed the body part from a corpse in his care.
During interrogation, Amaobi reportedly admitted to the act but gave a controversial explanation, claiming it was not intended to desecrate the dead.
According to him, the action was staged as a form of protest to draw attention to challenges facing the mortuary facility, including alleged overcrowding and unattended corpses.
He further claimed that over 18 bodies, said to be those of persons killed during security operations last year, had remained in the facility without government intervention, forcing him to seek public attention in an unusual way.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether other offences were committed.
The Benue State Police Command is expected to issue further updates as inquiries progress.
