FG Slams 13-Count Treason Charges on Alleged Coup Plotters

Federal High Court, Abuja

The Federal Government has filed a 13-count charge against a group of suspects accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The charges, bordering on treason, terrorism and waging war against the state, were brought before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Among those listed as defendants are a retired major general, a retired naval captain, a serving police inspector and three other individuals.

The case marks a significant development in an investigation that has unfolded over several months, following reports of an alleged coup plot within sections of the security establishment.

In October 2025, the Federal Government had cancelled a planned military parade to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, a move that sparked speculation about possible security threats.

Although initial reports linked the decision to an alleged coup attempt, the Defence Headquarters later denied any connection between the two developments.

Subsequently, reports emerged that several military officers had been arrested in connection with the alleged plot, with some still at large at the time.

In January 2026, the Defence Headquarters confirmed that investigations had uncovered evidence of a plan to unseat the government, noting that those involved would face appropriate legal processes.

The development drew public attention in March when families of detained officers called on the government to ensure a transparent trial. They renewed their demands in April, staging a protest at the National Assembly complex in Abuja and urging authorities to grant them access to their relatives.

With the filing of charges, the case is now set to proceed through the judicial system, where the accused persons are expected to respond to the allegations in open court.
