Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to Algeria, Lele, Dies at 50

The Federal Government has confirmed the death of Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who passed away at the age of 50 after a prolonged illness.

The announcement was made in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

According to the ministry, the late diplomat died in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye, where he had been receiving treatment.

Until his death, Lele served as Director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a role in which he played a key part in shaping Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement in the region.

He had recently been appointed ambassador-designate to Algeria by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following confirmation of his nomination by the Senate.

Describing his passing as a significant loss, the ministry said Lele was a career diplomat who served the country with dedication and professionalism.

It noted that he was widely respected for his “intellectual depth, strategic insight and commitment” to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy goals.

Born in Gamawa, Bauchi State, in 1976, Lele studied Economics at Bayero University Kano before joining the diplomatic service. Over the years, he held postings in Berlin, Lomé and Riyadh, where he represented Nigeria in various capacities.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, received his remains at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, and described him as “a hardworking, humble and fine officer,” whose absence would be deeply felt within the service.

The ministry said his death was a “monumental loss” not only to his immediate family but also to the nation’s foreign service community.

Condolences have been extended to his family, colleagues, and the government and people of Bauchi State, with prayers offered for the repose of his soul.
