A Justice of the Court of Appeal, Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike, has called on Nigerians to take collective responsibility for safety on the nation’s roads, stressing that reducing accidents requires active citizen participation.
She made the appeal during her investiture as an Honorary Special Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Abuja.
Speaking at the ceremony, Justice Nyesom-Wike said road safety should not be left solely to government agencies, urging individuals and communities to play their part in preventing crashes.
“The responsibility of safeguarding lives on Nigerian roads must be owned by all,” she said, calling on Nigerians to move from passive concern to active involvement, particularly through the Special Marshals scheme.
The event, held under the Federal Capital Territory Sector Command, was presided over by the Zonal Commanding Officer, RS7HQ, Assistant Corps Marshal Comfort Asom, who represented the Corps Marshal.
She highlighted the importance of volunteer marshals in promoting safe road culture and enforcing compliance with traffic rules.
Asom charged members of the scheme to maintain high standards of discipline, integrity and patriotism in the discharge of their duties, describing them as critical partners in the Corps’ advocacy efforts.

The ceremony, which also featured the National Coordinator of Special Marshals, Engr. Dr. Usman Adaji, attracted several Justices of the Court of Appeal, underscoring the growing institutional support for road safety initiatives.
In his remarks, the FCT Sector Commander, Corps Commander Tijani Iliyasu, said the command is intensifying efforts to expand public engagement and strengthen awareness campaigns across the territory.
He noted that the involvement of respected figures like Justice Nyesom-Wike would help drive behavioural change among motorists and reinforce adherence to traffic regulations.
The newly inducted Special Marshal, in her acceptance speech, warned against reckless driving and other unsafe practices, urging road users to act responsibly at all times.
She called for a nationwide shift in attitude, emphasising that preventing road crashes requires vigilance, discipline and a shared commitment to protecting lives.
