Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, endorsing his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as the preferred APC candidate for the 2027 Lagos governorship election in Lagos on Monday

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has welcomed his endorsement by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election, describing it as a strong vote of confidence in his capacity to lead the state.

Sanwo-Olu had, earlier on Monday, publicly backed Hamzat following a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where the deputy governor formally declared his intention to contest the governorship under the All Progressives Congress.

The meeting brought together members of the State Executive Council, party leaders and the influential Governor’s Advisory Council, including Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon, among others.

Reacting via his verified X handle, Hamzat expressed appreciation to the governor for the endorsement, noting that their years of collaboration in government had strengthened his resolve to serve.

“I am honoured by the endorsement of my governor, my brother and my friend. His trust means a great deal to me. We have worked side by side in the service of Lagos State, and I do not take this vote of confidence lightly,” he said.

He added that he remains committed to consolidating on the administration’s achievements, pledging to serve Lagos residents with “integrity, focus and a clear sense of purpose.”

The deputy governor is one of several aspirants eyeing the state’s top job, alongside figures such as Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, and Dr Samuel Ajose, also called SMA Gold.

Political observers say Hamzat’s chances may be boosted by a wave of endorsements from key party figures, including the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and former governor Babatunde Fashola, as well as support from the Justice Forum within the party.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described the endorsement as a consensus decision reached by party stakeholders, insisting that Hamzat possesses the experience and competence required to lead the state.

“It was unanimous that the deputy governor is fit and well-prepared for the job. He understands the workings of government and has demonstrated capacity over the years,” the governor said.

He highlighted Hamzat’s track record in office, citing his “integrity, loyalty, commitment and support” as qualities that distinguish him.

Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the role of President Bola Tinubu in shaping the leadership trajectory in Lagos, noting that the political foundation laid years ago continues to influence current developments.

“This is a man that has been built for the job. We believe he deserves the opportunity to lead Lagos,” the governor added.

The endorsement is seen as an early signal of alignment within the APC in Lagos, as political activities gradually gather pace ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Analysts say while the race is still unfolding, the growing support for Hamzat within party ranks could position him as a leading contender for the party’s ticket.
