Tinubu Donates Salaries to Military Welfare Fund on 74th Birthday

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has marked his 74th birthday by announcing a new welfare fund for members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, including wounded personnel and families of fallen soldiers.

The initiative was disclosed in a statement on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the President used the occasion of his birthday on Sunday to honour the sacrifices of military personnel and to launch a support system aimed at improving their welfare.

Tinubu has directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to create a special account for the fund, which will cater to injured service members, as well as widows, widowers and children of those who died in active service.

As part of his personal contribution, the President pledged to donate all his salaries since assuming office to serve as seed funding for the initiative.

The statement noted that the move reflects his commitment to ensuring that members of the armed forces and their families are not neglected.

“The President emphasised that this initiative is rooted in a solemn national obligation to care for those who stand in harm’s way and the families who bear the burden of their sacrifice,” the statement said.

Tinubu also called on state governors, lawmakers, the private sector and other well-meaning Nigerians to support the fund, adding that further details would be made public in due course.

He stressed that supporting military personnel should not be seen as charity, but as a responsibility owed to those who defend the country.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of service members, assuring that their sacrifices would be matched with proper care and recognition.
