Manchester City’s bid to retain the Premier League title suffered a setback on Monday night after they were held to a dramatic 3-3 draw by Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, a result that handed Arsenal a significant advantage in the title race.
Jeremy Doku struck deep into stoppage time to salvage a point for Pep Guardiola’s side, but the late rescue could not mask a second-half collapse that allowed Everton to turn the game on its head before City clawed their way back.
The outcome leaves Arsenal needing just three wins from their remaining fixtures to end a 22-year wait for the English league crown, with Mikel Arteta’s side now firmly in control of their destiny.
City remain five points behind the Gunners, though they still have a game in hand. However, the manner of their defensive breakdown will raise fresh concerns as the season reaches its decisive stage.
Guardiola’s men looked firmly in charge in the first half. After sustained pressure, Doku broke the deadlock just before the interval, curling a precise effort into the top corner following a neat assist from Rayan Cherki.
Everton, however, emerged from the break with renewed intensity and began to exploit growing uncertainty in the City backline. Their persistence paid off when Thierno Barry pounced on loose defending to level the score.
Moments later, Jake O’Brien powered home a header to put the hosts in front, before Barry struck again after another defensive lapse left City exposed in transition.
Erling Haaland briefly revived City’s hopes, pulling one back from close range, before Doku’s spectacular finish in the 97th minute ensured a share of the spoils.
Guardiola admitted his side lost control after the break but insisted they remain in contention.
“It’s better than losing. It shows the spirit of the team,” he said. “It’s not in our hands anymore. Before it was, now it isn’t. We have games left and we will see what happens.”
Everton will feel aggrieved not to have taken all three points after a performance that exposed City’s defensive fragility, while Arsenal now head into the final stretch of the season with their path to the title significantly clearer.
The Gunners face West Ham next, before hosting Burnley and travelling to Crystal Palace on the final day, with the championship firmly within reach if they maintain their current form.
For City, the draw may prove costly in a season where margins are narrowing and every slip now carries greater consequence in the title chase.
