Former Kano State Governor and ex-Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, has expressed confidence in emerging victorious in the 2027 race for the Kano Central Senatorial seat.
Shekarau spoke on Thursday in Abuja shortly after submitting his nomination and expression of interest forms for the contest.
The former governor said his ambition was anchored on hard work, prayers and a commitment to continue serving the people of Kano Central and Nigeria at large.
According to him, leadership is ultimately determined by God, while individuals are expected to work and pray towards their aspirations.
“When we are going into a contest with others, there are always two things: winning and losing. That has been my stand because my very good brother has told us in the Holy Quran that it is He who bestows leadership on whoever He decides,” he said.
“The only two things that the Prophet of Islam has asked us to do are: work for it and pray for it. I have been praying to succeed, and I have been working to succeed. With these two, by the grace of God, I will emerge the winner.”
Shekarau, who represented Kano Central in the 9th National Assembly, said his decision to seek a return to the Senate was informed by his desire to continue contributing to national development.
“I am representing fifteen local governments in Kano State. Above all, I am a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Nigeria first, then the constituency second. Without Nigeria, my constituency will not be there,” he stated.
Reflecting on his previous stint in the Senate, the former governor highlighted his role as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service, saying he prioritised the welfare of pensioners and public servants.
“As chairman of the committee, the records are there. For the four years I was there, I made sure pensioners were listened to. PenCom received billions out of what was being owed by the federal government,” he said.
He added that efforts were also made to ensure compliance with constitutional provisions requiring periodic review of pension salaries.
Political activities in Kano have continued to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, with consultations and alignments intensifying among major contenders for elective offices.
