Saudi Arabia has officially declared the commencement of Dhul-Hijjah 1447 following the sighting of the crescent moon, paving the way for this year’s Hajj pilgrimage and Eid al-Adha celebrations.

The country’s Supreme Court confirmed that Monday, May 18, 2026, marks the first day of Dhul-Hijjah in the Islamic calendar, according to reports by Khaleej Times on Sunday.

The announcement signals the beginning of one of Islam’s most sacred periods, during which millions of Muslims across the world prepare for Hajj rites in Makkah and the observance of Eid al-Adha.

With the moon sighting confirmed, Saudi authorities fixed Tuesday, May 26, as the Day of Arafah, while Eid al-Adha will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.

The dates are significant for Muslims globally as they determine the timing of Hajj activities and religious observances linked to the annual pilgrimage.

Dhul-Hijjah is regarded as one of the holiest months in Islam and is traditionally marked by increased acts of worship, charity, fasting, and spiritual reflection.

The month also hosts the annual Hajj pilgrimage in the holy city of Makkah, a religious obligation expected of every Muslim who is physically and financially capable of undertaking the journey at least once in a lifetime.

The Day of Arafah, observed on the ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah, is considered the spiritual peak of the pilgrimage, as worshippers gather on the plains of Arafat for prayers and supplications.

Eid al-Adha, which follows the next day, commemorates the devotion and obedience of Prophet Ibrahim, who, according to Islamic tradition, was willing to sacrifice his son in submission to God’s command.

The celebration is usually marked by prayers, animal sacrifice, sharing of meals, and acts of charity to the less privileged.

Muslim faithful in different countries are expected to begin preparations for the festival and related religious activities following the official announcement from Saudi Arabia.
