A violent confrontation between soldiers and masqueraders during the Echane Masquerade Festival in Ogaminana, Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State, has left two people dead and several others injured, forcing the state government to suspend the annual cultural celebration across Ebiraland.

The incident occurred on Sunday and reportedly began when two soldiers, said to have been dressed in civilian clothing, were allegedly attacked by some masqueraders participating in a festival procession. The clash quickly escalated, drawing in more personnel and triggering panic in the community.

Eyewitnesses said the soldiers later returned to the area with reinforcement. The situation deteriorated into chaos as gunshots were heard, sending residents and traders fleeing for safety. Some residents were also said to have responded by throwing stones at the security operatives.

Two civilians were confirmed dead in the aftermath of the violence. One of the victims, identified as Omeiza, a Point-of-Sale operator, was reportedly inside his kiosk when he was struck by a stray bullet. He was later confirmed dead.

Another resident was said to have been shot inside his home and died shortly after being taken to a hospital for treatment.

There were also claims from some residents that the incident may have involved off-duty soldiers who had returned to join the festival and reacted after learning that some of their colleagues had been attacked by masqueraders in the Inorere area of Ogaminana.

Community leaders, including members of the Adavi Peace Committee and local cultural groups, reportedly made efforts to calm the situation, but their intervention failed to restore order as tensions continued to rise.

Sources further said additional security personnel were later deployed from Okene following distress calls. Their arrival was followed by renewed shooting, which allegedly led to more casualties and injuries among bystanders.

Residents have called for a thorough investigation into the incident, urging authorities to ensure accountability and prevent a repeat of such violence during cultural events.

Attempts to obtain an official reaction from the Kogi State Police Command were unsuccessful as calls and messages to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Oyiza Saliu, were not answered as of press time.

Following the unrest, the Kogi State Government announced the immediate suspension of the Echane Masquerade Festival across Ebiraland.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, who said security reports indicated that continued festival activities could pose a threat to public peace and order in Kogi Central.

While acknowledging the cultural importance of the festival, the government said protecting lives and property remained its top priority.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo subsequently directed security agencies to enforce compliance with the suspension order across affected communities.

The government also warned that anyone found organising or participating in the suspended festival activities would face appropriate sanctions under the law.

It urged traditional rulers, youth leaders, and residents to cooperate with security agencies in maintaining peace and stability in the state.
