Tragedy in Ondo as Mentally Ill Man Kills Son, Two Others

A quiet community in Okitipupa, Ondo State, was thrown into mourning on Tuesday after a man suspected to be mentally unstable allegedly killed three members of his family, including his own son.
The incident, which occurred in Okitipupa Local Government Area, has left residents in shock, with many still struggling to understand what could have led to the gruesome act.
According to sources, the suspect reportedly attacked the victims with a machete inside their residence under circumstances that remain unclear. The victims included two young boys and a female relative said to be preparing for admission into a tertiary institution.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the attacker fled the scene shortly after carrying out the act, creating panic within the neighbourhood.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the development as heartbreaking, noting that the loss has deeply affected the community.
“The victims include a student and two young boys. One of them is his son, while the others are extended family members. It is a devastating incident, and everyone is still in shock,” the source said.
The suspect was later apprehended by security operatives.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, Abayomi Jimoh, said the suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
He added that the bodies of the victims have been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital in Okitipupa.
“The suspect has been arrested, and a thorough investigation is ongoing. He will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation,” Jimoh stated.
The tragic incident has sparked fresh concern over mental health challenges and the need for improved access to care and early intervention, particularly at the community level.
